What is the 4P Tax?
4P capable processors were once given a price that was prohibitive for all but the most critical applications. As the need for performance increased a large segment of the datacenter community wanted the performance but could not rationalize the price differential. The result of the huge price delta between the 4P and 2P eventually began to erode the 4P market – it became too hard to justify paying “the 4P tax” just to get greater performance and scalability.
Death of the 4P Tax
In 2010 AMD introduced the AMD Opteron™ 6100 Series processors. For the first time, AMD actually cut the premium between a 2P and 4P capable processor and bringing new levels of performance, scalability and value to a suddenly revitalized 4P market. The AMD Opteron 6100 Series processors were the first to break that 4P tax, and now, as we approach the One Year Anniversary of this revolutionary product, we’re going to spark another revolution, by giving two lucky winners our version of a tax refund.
